Next up in the celebration of the upcoming 15th anniversary of the Seton Shields Genealogical Grants program is a look back at Ms. C’s class, who received a grant in 2012 via DonorsChoose.com. (Megan asked me, her assistant, to pick out a selection of thank-you notes to share with you over the next few weeks. You’ll be seeing more of these thank you cards from students because they’re too smile-inducing not to share!) 🙂

For the 150th grant, Megan opted to browse DonorsChoose.com for school projects across the country that had some aspect of family, national or international history and culture associated with them. She remembered that she was fortunate enough to start playing with genealogy way back in the 6th grade due to a homework assignment and thought she might be able to pass that spark along to a new generation.

Ms. C’s students, in her own words, “hail from diverse backgrounds and speak many languages. So, in order to help my students develop a sense of pride about themselves and their cultures, I plan on creating a diversity unit of study that would include multicultural literature. Working in small reading groups, my students would read fiction as well as nonfiction books that reflect Asian, African, Spanish, and European cultures. They would learn to analyze characters, summarize main ideas, and identify cause and effect relationships.”

The students loved the books they received and sent Megan a batch of thank-you notes, one of which is pictured above and two more below.
